Cleo blackmails a wealthy businessman for money, then loses it all to her lazy boyfriend's gambling problem. Frustrated by her lack of success, she goes after the slow-witted son of her blackmail victim, only to find herself falling in love--but her story comes to a tragic end as her own character flaws cause her downfall. SATAN WAS A LADY includes many of Doris Wishman's trademarks, including sex, comedy, action, a non-traditional use of editing and camera movement. The characters are fascinating, quirky and colorful, and Cleo stands out as one of the toughest femme fatales in recent film history. This independent, grass roots genre film is a must-see, especially for fans of Ed Wood or Russ Meyer. SATAN WAS A LADY was screened at New York's Anthology Film Archives as part of the 8th Annual New York Underground Film Festival (NYUFF).
